One More Completed Home-Also on Lake Sunapee!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted some photos of a recently completed project on Lake Sunapee.

Here is another one, this time we hired Peter Bloch to take some photos from his drone. John W. Hession, our favorite photographer was there too, taking photos.

This home will truly be used as a family home for years to come, it is such a pleasure getting to know our clients, who become our friends too. For more photos of this project, please go to our website

Our Clients Truly Make the Difference!

Our wonderful clients, Rick & Cindy

Many lakefront homes existed before the adoption of zoning regulations. In part, this is both benefit and challenge when building a new home. For these homeowners, it was the impetus for freedom in design focused on family and enjoyment of the Lake.

Striving for creative solutions that were “...in any way fun and inventive”, the clients eagerly asked we share all concepts with them during the architectural design process. Unique ideas and existing treasures were consistently explored and incorporated; such as the salvaged porthole windows and the reclaimed chestnut in the recreation room. The narrow lot offered challenges imposed by setbacks from neighbors and Lake Sunapee itself. However, creativity and thoughtful arrangement of rooms allow the design to capture views from all levels of the home. The highlight, a folding glass NanaWall for unobstructed lake views from the main floor.

Thank you, Rick and Cindy, for sharing your adventure with Bonin Architects! It was a pleasure, and we wish you many, many years of enjoyment on the lake with family and friends. Please view our website, www.boninarchitects.com for more information about our firm.

Yet Another Photo Shoot of a Completed Project

Thigh high in the water-taking the perfect shot-and it was-stay tuned...

Here's John Hession again, you may have seen him before in a previous blog I wrote a few weeks ago. He's a professional photographer who will do whatever it takes for the perfect shot, as you can see here!

A typical photo shoot can last twelve to fourteen hours, and sometimes needs several return trips for the perfect sunrise or sunset photo. We're really excited to see the finished house photos of the last two projects. Not only does John take the photos, he edits them for us as well, making sure that there are no reflections or shadows or bursts of lights; items such as these that can really affect the outcome of the photos we choose for our portfolio.

We've seen some of the raw photos so far and we are expecting to see the final version of the two homes by next week. I'll be sharing them soon, and we'll post them on our website www.boninarchitects.com.

A Debate Session About Fonts

A Preview of Some of our Choices

We've used the same logo for the past ten years, using the Papyrus font. Did you know that Papyrus is...."The World's Most Hated Font," apparently? Jeremy and I didn't know that it was, or that there was such a thing as hatred towards a font, but there is! I Googled, it once it was pointed out to me, try it, you'll see.

But, we LIKED our logo, we designed our logo, it's part of our branding...however, we listened, researched and agreed that it is time for a change. Thanks to our landscape architect, Greg Rusnica,  he created several new logos for our review and discussion. We think we've decided on one, (without using the dreaded Papyrus font), so keep watching within the next week or so, we will start incorporating it into our updated website, www.boninarchitects.com, our signs, signatures, ads, and literature.

The Business Of Architecture Summit in NYC

The view from our hotel room

I attended a two day summit in NYC, along with my husband and business partner, Jeremy Bonin earlier this week. It was extremely informative and inspirational, filled with techniques we will be able to use to better serve our clients. We met many great colleagues along the way as well; people traveled from all over the United States, as well as Australia, New Zealand, England, and Canada, to name a few.

Although the days were long, we did manage to sneak in a bit of touristy stuff too. We saw Wicked, did a little sightseeing, and went to a pretty cool rooftop lounge to relax.
Here we are waiting to see Wicked-it was awesome!

Upcoming Photo Shoot of Another Completed Project

Next week, we'll have another completed home design to add to our portfolio! Our design team worked on this fantastic project located on Lake Sunapee, NH. We provided the architectural and landscape design for our clients. Here's a preview of the home which professional photographer, John Hession will take for us. We've used John many times for our projects, he's super talented and a great guy.

These two photos were taken by Jeremy the other night from our boat, in advance of the shoot, just to see where the light would land during sunset on the house. The photos should be ready in a few weeks. I'll post them when they are finished!

Head Shots For Our Website

Here they are, our head shots for our updated website! We're working on the updates to the site, but in the meantime, here are all of our photos. Our updated website should be ready within the next two weeks, so please keep checking www.boninarchitects.com. We're really happy with the photos, which were taken by John W. Hession. John takes most of the photos for our completed projects, and he takes many of the photos for New Hampshire Home Magazine as well. Maybe someday I'll post some of the ones that didn't make it to our website, they're pretty funny-eyes closed, mid-blink, half smile, looking away type of mid shot pictures.

Public Speaking-Still Scary After All These Years

Me-At the podium, hoping not to faint in front of everyone

This morning, I was honored to represent our architectural firm as one of the guest speakers at the Leading Women event hosted by Ledyard Bank. I was really nervous, although I have spoken in public many times before. It just never seems to get easier for me! It was a great event which included many other women business owners.

Happy 8th Anniversary with Bonin Architects, Christopher Timberlake!

We would like to wish Christopher Timberlake a happy 8th Anniversary with Bonin Architects!

Jeremy, Jackie and I have a long and wonderful history of working together prior to Chris joining BAA. Clients and our design staff really enjoy working with Chris, and to us, he is part of our family!

Here's a bit of info about Chris:

Chris Timberlake works directly with clients and consultants on a variety of projects. Chris obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Studies and his Masters degree in Architecture from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.

Prior to joining Bonin Architects, Chris was an architectural designer for Davis Frame Company for five years, and was head of the design department during his last year there.  His knowledge in sustainable design, green building, and energy efficient homes, high level of creativity, devotion to quality design, and professionalism benefits all of our projects. His professional experience, coupled with his enthusiasm for architecture and strong work ethic is a great asset to our company.

Chris is an Eagle Scout who achieved Silver Palm status. He enjoys designing and crafting fine woodworking and furniture projects in addition to renovations to his home. In his free time, he enjoys cross country skiing, alpine skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and golf. Here's a link to Chris' blog about some of the woodworking projects he completes in his spare time. http://ecostudiodesign.blogspot.com/

Interactive Visualization

When we first meet with potential clients, one of the items we discuss most often is how clients say that they just cannot visualize spaces, or so they thought....not anymore! When clients work with us, we can really help communicate spaces in our firm's designs effectively and successfully before construction begins.

Technology has come such a long way with programs which we use to help our clients understand spaces. It's not just spaces anymore, we are able to show details, shadows, colors, fixtures, and building methods in levels we are not able to before with flat line drawings a few years ago.

In fact, today, we met with potential clients who are considering a sizeable renovation and expansion to their home, and they had the original "blueprints" of their home from 30 years ago which they obtained from the previous homeowners. I could almost smell the ammonia radiating off the prints from years gone by, and if you've been following my past blog posts, you know that I was starting to get a bit woozy; I still think my lungs are scarred for life from the early days of my career.

Take a look at our Facebook post from today, you'll be able to see and use the interactive program we're using for a current project on the seacoast of NH.

Yes, Even in the Wintertime in New England

Construction Continues During Winter Months-Brrrr!

Quite often, potential clients will ask if construction continues during the winter months. The answer is yes, and although it might not be possible to work outside every day, on most days construction continues until the project is completed. Today is one of those days where working outside is brutal for most folks in our industry.

It is snowing heavily today, schools are closed, and half of our staff is home, they needed to travel from the southern part of the state where it has been snowing heavily for awhile. We always ask our employees to exercise their best judgement when deciding whether or not to travel. Jeremy and I live about two minutes from our New London office, so traveling for us is not an issue, although didn't I read somewhere that most accidents happen within a mile of your home?

Above is an example of construction continuing during the winter months. This great family gathering space is being constructed on Lake Sunapee, about as close to the lake as you can build anymore, there was an existing structure there which needed to be replaced. It is a timber frame and it will have a fireplace which our clients will enjoy on days like today. Please feel to reach out to me if you are considering building a new home anywhere in New England. www.boninarchitects.com

Another Award! 2017 Best of Houzz-Design

Do you use Houzz when researching ideas for your new future home design?

We are a huge fan of Houzz.com and highly recommend it to our clients to use as a tool when communicating with us during the design process. You can create idea books of things you may like (or even dislike) about particular items in a home, and send them to us to help express your personal tastes.

Why didn't I invent this?!? I wish Houzz.com was available to us when we first started our firm ten years ago. For the fifth year in a row, we won an award from Houzz for Best of Houzz in Design. That is a huge honor for us, since there are so many architectural firms out there and the competition is pretty intense. We're thankful and grateful for the recognition, thanks Houzz.com!

Here's another way clients communicate with us, sometimes they will bring in a huge stack of magazines, earmarked with pages of photos they would like us to see to help visualize their goals for their home. Either way is fine with us, we feel that any of the ways in which you share those ideas with us, the better! Communication is key in creating a custom home design. Please feel free to contact me about starting the process of designing your new home, I'm happy to answer questions anytime. www.boninarchitects.com
